It was back in early
2001 when I first hearing about the Little Hearts orphanage in southeast
India. Since then I have had the privilege of striking up a friendship with
Iyyappan, the founder and director of Little Hearts and I have been able to
visit the orphanage numerous times in the last few years.
When I initially saw
photos of the 17 mentally and physically disabled children who lived at
Little Hearts it really touched my heart and I wanted to be active in
improving their lives in whatever way I could. Over the past number of years
I have been active in raising awareness of the Little Hearts orphanage and
have been fundraising to help support the work there. It has been very
encouraging to see the orphanage expand from a one room hut to: a three
story accommodation building, a three story school and office building,
a health centre and a large purpose built kitchen. The number of
children has also risen to over 100 with the over 18 year olds being
separated into two separate locations.
My first fundraising
project, back in 2002, was to buy a mini bus for the orphanage. It was an
amazing experience to be able to raise the money locally along with others
and bring it out to India with us and buy the mini bus while we were there.
It brought tears to my eyes to see the bus drive into Little Hearts for the
first time. Then in 2003 the next project was to build the health centre.
The centre cost approximately £8000 to build and I felt humbled and
privileged to be able to cut the ribbon and declare it officially open in
November 2003.
It is so encouraging
to visit India each time and see the work expanding and see how lives are
being touched. This is the reason I became involved with starting Acts
Ministries. It is my desire to help the underprivileged and disadvantaged
people in developing countries by showing then Gods love in a real and
practical everyday way.
